Betting Preview of the Gennady “GGG” Golovkin vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez Rematch

In the entertainment industry, the sequel rarely surpasses the original. Well, this isn’t Hollywood. This is Vegas, BABY! On September 15, 2018, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, we will get a rare opportunity to see a sequel outperforming its original.

For the boxing fans and purists out there, this will be the biggest event of the boxing year. Yes, sorry, KSI and Logan Paul, but this rematch is the real fight the public is looking forward to. It has been decades since boxing fans were able to watch a meaningful rematch.

Lineal Middleweight World Champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) and WBC/WBA/IBO Middleweight World Champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) return to T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas for the highly-anticipated rematch.

After the first fight ended in a controversial draw, we have been waiting for this rematch. Unfortunately, the fight was delayed after Canelo Alvarez failed two drug tests. Both times, he tested positive for the banned substance clenbuterol.

After Canelo served his 6-month suspension, the fighters renegotiated the terms to put the rematch back together.

The build-up to this fight has been all business. Neither fighter is interested in seeing each other face to face until fight week, so there was no overblown media conference and not even a media tour to drive up interest.

This is not your typical build-up for the biggest rematch in recent boxing history. Both fighters are focused on their camps and not on each other. Then again, this is the type of matchup that doesn’t need to be sold to the public.

They will flock to T-Mobile and gladly dish out the $84.99 for the pay-per-view.

Now it’s time to get down to business. Not only will I make a pick for the fight, but I will also be taking a look at some prop bets that have me as excited for September 15th to get here as I was on Christmas morning when I was 10 years old.

Betting Odds for Golovkin vs. Alvarez

Let’s start with a look at the odds for the outright winner of this bout.

Gennady Golovkin-155
Saul Alvarez+135

According to SportsBetting.ag, Gennady Golovkin remains the betting favorite at -155, leaving Alvarez as the +135 underdog.

Many of the fans felt GGG was robbed of a win by decision in the first fight. I was one of those fans. I had Canelo finishing strong but still had Golovkin winning 7 rounds and Canelo winning 5 rounds.

The upcoming rematch was initially scheduled for May 5, 2018. Two months before it was due to take place, however, Alvarez failed two drugs tests. Traces of the banned substance clenbuterol were found in his system, prompting the Nevada Athletic Commission to hand down a six-month suspension.

Unable to compete on the scheduled date, Alvarez was forced to withdraw from the fight. He subsequently negotiated for it to happen after his suspension is served.

This is the classic matchup of the aggressive power puncher in Gennady Golovkin versus the counter-punching Saul Alvarez. Both fighters got away from their strengths early in the first matchup but leaned on them late in the fight.

The books still see Golovkin as the favorite, which he should still be. The man holds all the major middleweight belts and was robbed of a victory in the first fight. Add that Gennady has had another fight since their first matchup, and there is a reason the bettors are favoring GGG again.

Since their first matchup, Canelo has failed two drug tests, and when the two meet at the T-Mobile Arena on September 15th, 2018, he will have been out of the ring for exactly one year.

Now that I have laid out the matchup coming up in two weeks, let’s take a look at who I feel will win the biggest boxing fight of the year.

Who Wins Golovkin vs. Alvarez?

This time around, I think both fighters will make sure the fight doesn’t go to the scorecards. More specifically, though, I don’t think Gennady Golovkin will let the fight go the distance. Golovkin isn’t getting any younger, and at 36 years of age, he is running out of time to be at the top of his game.

This fight will be Golovkin’s career-defining moment.

Up until these two fights, the biggest criticism of GGG’s career was the fact that he hadn’t faced past champions like the elite boxers do throughout their career. That criticism could help to fire him up.

Then you need to add the fact that Canelo has failed two drug tests. Gennady takes Canelo’s failed drug tests as disrespecting the sport of boxing, and he’s going to be determined not to let someone he views as a “cheat” beat him.

It’s worth noting that Canelo hasn’t been in action since their first fight a year ago, leading me to believe that Canelo will have some ring rust to work through.

All Canelo has done over the last year is fail two drug tests and have knee surgery to clean up a cyst.

Even if Canelo’s knee surgery was to just clean up a cyst, the fact that he sports a knee brace is enough of a concern for me. Now, it may not have been major knee surgery, but it was still surgery nonetheless. I would have really liked to see Canelo take a warm-up fight before taking on Golovkin again.

GGG had a warm-up fight versus Vanes Martirosyan to get himself prepared for the Canelo rematch. He defeated Martirosyan by a second-round knockout in classic GGG fashion. It was a statement win for Golovkin, who earned his first KO win in his last three fights.

Even at 36 years old, it’s tough to see Canelo (or anyone else for that matter) stopping Gennady at cleaning out the middleweight division. He feels disrespected and is going to make sure everyone watching the rematch knows who the best fighter is.

PICKGolovkin to Win-155

Let’s take a closer look at some other possible outcomes for the fight that I will be looking to profit from.

Gennady Golovkin to Win by KO/TKO/DQ

According to Bovada, Golovkin is +155 to win by knockout, technical knockout, or disqualification. I like this bet a lot.

After the first fight ended in a controversial draw, I don’t see Gennady letting the fight go the distance. I’m under the impression that this fight is going to go a lot differently than the first.

In that first fight, both fighters were very cautious in the opening rounds. Both wanted to feel out their opponents’ power and make sure they wouldn’t get knocked out early.

This time around, I think the “feeling-out process” will end quickly for Gennady.

I expect Golovkin to attack Canelo early and often knowing that Canelo doesn’t have the power to knock him out. Especially after the failed drug tests, GGG will feel the need to prove that the first fight was a fluke and that Canelo can’t handle his power.

All this leads me to like Golovkin winning the fight by knockout, technical knockout, or disqualification.

PICKGennady Golovkin to Win by KO/TKO/DQ+155
Will the Fight Go the Distance?

The odds offered by Bovada on this prop are as follows.

Fight to Go the Distance-130
Fight Not to Go the Distance+110

This prop bet is my favorite bet of the fight. Will the fight go the full 12 rounds once again? If you have read any of this article up to this point, you know how I feel about this. I just don’t see it happening.

Both fighters have said they will not let this fight go to the judges’ scorecards again, and I believe them.

Gennady Golovkin wants to prove to the world that cheaters of the sport can’t win in the end and that he has the power to knock Alvarez out.

On the other hand, Canelo wants to show everyone that he doesn’t need any performance-enhancing drugs and that he is naturally strong enough to do what no man has done before, which is knock out Gennady Golovkin.

Either way you want to look at it, both these men will be looking to end the fight early.

PICKFight Not to Go the Distance+100
Conclusion

Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez will finally settle the score this September 15th at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

After their first fight ended in a controversial draw, we all have been waiting to see the second installment of this matchup.

I have told you how I feel the fight will go and have presented some bets I feel deserve some attention.

Regardless of how the fight plays out, this is a treat for all fight fans. It has been too long since we’ve gotten to enjoy a rematch of this magnitude.
