Celebrities live a different lifestyle and are on a higher pay grade than the rest of us.
Therefore, they can afford to bet much higher stakes than the average person.
This has led to some incredible stories involving multimillion-dollar wagers, exclusive underground poker rings, and scandals. Some of these stories have surfaced in the news and become legends.
That said, I’m going to cover 7 celebrities who’ve been involved in the biggest gambling news stories of all time.
Ben Affleck has always had an affinity for playing poker. But 2014 news reports revealed that he also has a penchant for blackjack and is an adept card counter.
The Batman v Superman actor is so good, in fact, that Las Vegas’ Hard Rock asked him to play a different game because he was successfully counting cards.
Afterward, Affleck discussed his love of blackjack and why he became a card counter.
Unfortunately, this cool story turned into a nightmare, because Affleck’s gambling habit affected his family life. A TMZ report shed light on just how bad things got between him and then-wife Jennifer Garner.
Affleck initially denied the rumors. But it was obvious that there was more to the story when the couple separated in 2015.
One of the biggest celebrity gambling stories ever was an underground poker ring that ran in 2011.This wasn’t just any poker game either because it featured some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, like Affleck, Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Tobey Maguire.
The reason the poker game was uncovered is because Brad Ruderman, an LA-based hedge fund manager, lost $35 million to the other players. Brad Ruderman’s former clients then sued the winners to recoup some of their money.
Maguire was one of the key defendants, given that he was the biggest winner. In fact, a Daily Mail report claimed that he won between “$30 and $40 million.”
This is a massive fortune that few poker pros can dream of winning – let alone a Hollywood star. But while this story makes Maguire out to be a legend, the recent movie Molly’s Game portrays him in a negative light.
The Ringer states that the Spiderman actor is almost assuredly depicted by “Player X.” Played by Michael Cera, Maguire is “a sinister figure who takes pleasure in, as he puts it in the film, ‘destroying [the] lives’ of his fellow players, and eventually Bloom herself.”
While Bloom and the movie go light on the other celebrity depictions, it’s pretty clear that Player X is the film’s main antagonist.
Player X degrades Bloom and is annoyed at how much money she makes in tips from the players. He eventually moves the game to another venue and swears at her.
Player X later lightens up, though, upon hearing the emotion in Bloom’s voice and getting satisfaction over his control of the situation.
It’s important to note that these are only accounts from Bloom herself. But they make Maguire out to be a very skilled yet mean-spirited gambler.
Michael Phelps is known for smashing almost every Olympic and competitive swimming record known to man.
He holds records for the most Olympic medals (twenty-three), gold medals in individual events (thirteen), and overall individual Olympic medals (sixteen). Phelps also broke American swimmer Mark Spitz’s record for most gold medals in a single Olympics with eight at the 2004 Athens Games.
It’s no wonder why the poker world got so excited when Phelps began competing in live tournaments in the early 2010s. Many hoped that he would sign a sponsorship deal with a major online poker site and further the game’s popularity.
But this never materialized because Phelps is mainly interested in playing the game for fun. Even as a recreational player, though, Phelps is very competitive on the felt.
Phelps’ poker journey began in 2011 when he bought a house in Baltimore and roomed with poker pro Jeff Gross. The latter said that Phelps took the game seriously and was one of the top celebrity players.
His poker passion was evident during the 2016 Rio Olympics when Phelps was seen relaxing poolside and playing Crazy Pineapple on his phone.
Meanwhile, rival Chad le Clos was jumping around intensely and getting fired up. This actually became a famous scene used to show the rivals’ differences in personality.
He’s tallied six live tournament cashes for $8,383 and continues to make regular appearances at the World Series of Poker.
Retired boxer Floyd Mayweather has never been against creating a spectacle. And his showmanship, combined with his 50-0 boxing record, has helped him amass a $400-million net worth.
Mayweather likes using his insane fortune to make some of the biggest wagers in the sports betting world.
He reportedly won $5.9 million by betting on a 2013 NBA Playoffs game between the Miami Heat and Indiana Pacers. He picked the Heat to cover the spread, and they won by a comfortable 23-point margin.
Another rumor claims that Mayweather wagered $10 million on the Denver Broncos in the 2014 Super Bowl. His wager reportedly revolved around Denver both covering the spread and leading at the half.
The Broncos lost 43-8 to the Seattle Seahawks, meaning he would’ve dropped a lot of money. Mayweather denied the rumors; but then again, he doesn’t discuss or tweet his losing bets.
While “Money” has never confirmed the Heat and Broncos bets, it’s well known that he’s placed other huge wagers. In fact, he bets so much on sports that Las Vegas casinos regularly give him top-notch VIP service.
Mayweather also attempted to wager on himself in a 2017 boxing match with Conor McGregor. He’d tried wagering $400,000 on himself at -200 odds, and the fight ending in under 9.5 rounds.
The M Resort had concerns over the legality of Mayweather betting on his own fight. Money eventually grew tired of waiting for a decision and left without placing the wager.
A six-time NBA champion, Michael Jordan is widely regarded as the greatest basketball player of all time. It just so happens that he’s one of the biggest gamblers ever, too.
MJ is the source of many famous gambling stories.
Fellow NBA legend Charles Barkley said that Jordan once bet another man $300,000 on a single golf putt.
Earvin “Magic” Johnson told a story about Jordan’s poker habits during the 1992 USA Dream Team run at the Olympics. Johnson said that MJ would sleep for one hour per night while staying up to play poker with Magic, Barkley, and Scottie Pippen.
The amazing thing is that Jordan still woke up and completely dominated his international competition en route to the Dream Team winning gold.
But while Jordan is the center of some great stories, his gambling problem also caused serious controversies.
He was spotted gambling in Atlantic City during the Chicago Bulls’ 1993 run to the NBA title. The Bulls were playing the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals, and Jordan spent the night before on a gambling binge.
Shortly after Chicago won their third straight championship, the NBA began investigating Jordan’s gambling habits. Four months afterward, MJ made the stunning decision to retire from basketball.
During his retirement press conference, Jordan was asked if he would ever come back to back to basketball.
This odd comment about Stern has led to conspiracy theories that the NBA handed Jordan a lengthy suspension for various gambling-related incidents.
Jordan’s buddy Charles Barkley also made his share of negative headlines for gambling. In Barkley’s case, it’s because he lost so much money playing casino games.
The reason why the “Round Mound of Rebounds” had such big losses is because he also set lofty goals. In fact, he wanted to win a seven-figure profit every time he took a trip to Vegas.
Eventually, he admitted that he had a major gambling problem and needed to work through it.
“Do I have a gambling problem? Yeah, I do have a gambling problem, but I don’t consider it a problem because I can afford to gamble. It’s just a stupid habit that I’ve got to get under control, because it’s just not a good thing to be broke after all of these years.”
Some of Barkley’s preferred gambling activities include blackjack, golf, and poker. It’s unclear to what extent he gambles these days, given that he toned down his wagering following “$10 million” in lifetime losses.
Charlie Sheen has produced plenty of negative headlines over the last decade-plus. He famously had a meltdown in 2011, where he was ousted from may-hate CBS show Two and a Half Men.
Sheen has since dealt with alcoholism, drug addiction, mental illness, anti-Semitism, and gambling addiction.
The latter was revealed in 2006, when his ex-wife Denise Richards explained in divorce papers that Charlie was losing $200,000 every week on gambling.
Richards noted that the bulk of the losses came from betting on sports, where he was very unsuccessful.
She detailed an incident in 2005, where Sheen was placing a sports bet over the phone while taking her to the hospital for the birth of their child, Lola.
Sheen also frequently checked his pager while Richards was undergoing a C-section to see if he’d won a big sports bet. Richards said that her ex spent the bulk of his time gambling online when they’d leave for romantic getaways.
Some of the celebrities covered here are good at gambling, while others are degenerates who’ve lost millions of dollars.
The best celebrity gamblers who became big news stories are Tobey Maguire, Ben Affleck, Michael Phelps, and Floyd Mayweather. Celebs who could’ve really used some gambling lessons include Charles Barkley and Charlie Sheen.
As for Jordan, I’m not sure what level of success he did or didn’t achieve. But it’s clear that he was extremely passionate about gambling to the point where he’d sacrifice sleep.
I know at some point in the future, we’ll hear even more interesting stories about celebrity gamblers. That said, I’d love to see if their stories top any of the celebrities on this list.

Even people who know nothing about Las Vegas know that it’s a gourmand’s paradise.
This post lists 22 restaurants and eateries in Las Vegas where every food lover should eat. Even travelers with the heartiest of appetites can make this list last for a week or so.
The variety of food in Sin City is staggering. It doesn’t matter if you’re looking for large quantities of food on the cheap or fine dining. You’ll find it in Vegas.
My suggestion is to pay no attention to the health aspects of the food you’re eating while you’re in Vegas. You can work out and eat salads and yogurt when you get back home.
I’m a far cry from a health nut. In fact, I love red meat. You’ll notice plenty of burger joints and steakhouses on my list. I’m also partial to sweets, so you’ll find lots of listings for candy and dessert joints, too.
The good news is that Vegas caters to all kinds of diners. If you don’t like my list, you can easily create your own list.
They call it the most important meal of the day.
I have four recommendations for breakfast in Las Vegas, but don’t forget that you can find lots of hotel and casino buffets serving sumptuous breakfasts and brunch.
They claim to have been voted the best buffet in Downtown Las Vegas, but they don’t cite what election it was.
It doesn’t matter, though, because it’s one of the best breakfast places in town.
If you’re in Vegas over the weekend, you should try to visit during champagne brunch on Saturday or Sunday morning.
This is one of the most affordable ways to ingest calories in Sin City, by the way. Their breakfast buffet is just $7.99 per person, and the champagne brunch on the weekend is only $11.99 per person. They’re open for breakfast every day at 7 am.
Homestyle breakfast is available 24 hours a day at the Pantry.
They specialize in omelets, pancakes, and scrambled eggs.
The food is over the top, too! Here’s an example of what’s on their “generic” breakfast sandwich:
Scrambled eggs, sliced ham, truffled mushrooms, smoked Gouda cheese, and savory mayonnaise, all on a toasted ciabatta bun.
You’re not limited to breakfast at the Pantry, but why would you want anything else?
This isn’t the most affordable breakfast spot in town, but it’s a great place to eat if you love breakfast food. (And I’m known as someone who can eat breakfast three meals a day.)
The Veranda serves Italian cuisine, but they’re also open for breakfast from 6:30 am to 11 am Monday through Friday.
(They open at 7 am on Saturday and Sunday morning.)
The ambience is casual but sophisticated. Reservations aren’t a bad idea, but they’re not strictly necessary, either—especially not for breakfast.
They offer a breakfast buffet on the weekends, but the order of the day at the Veranda is freshness. They serve fresh juice, fresh fruits, and on the weekends, fresh-baked donuts. They also offer terrific crepes and quiches.
Lunch is my second-favorite meal of the day, right after breakfast. I’m going to focus mostly on the wide variety of burger choices available in the city because I think nothing says lunch like a cheeseburger.
I’ve included a couple of other options for people who don’t share my love of cheeseburgers, though.
They’re located on the Strip, and they’re terrific. They open at 11 am and close at midnight.
I have simple tastes, so my favorite burger there is the Bacon Crunchburger.
It features bacon, potato chips, and American cheese—the Cadillac of cheese, as far as I’m concerned.
They also serve a great brunch burger, which, of course, has hash browns and a fried egg. The Bobby Blue plus Bacon is also worth trying, but only if you like blue cheese. They serve salads and a veggie burger for the health-conscious.
By the way, the “Bobby” in the name refers to the chef who owns the restaurant—Bobby Flay.
This sandwich shop has been open since 1976.
The difference in a sandwich here and at other sandwich shops is that all their ingredients are home-made in-house.
They even roast their own turkeys and roast beef.
They’ve won all kinds of awards like “Best Sandwich” and “Best Fast Food.” They have over one hundred locations throughout the United States now, but the Capriotti’s in Las Vegas is a classic.
Capriotti’s is open daily from 10 am to 8:30 pm.
Bobby Flay isn’t the only celebrity chef with a burger joint in Las Vegas.
I’m not a fan of Gordon Ramsay’s in-your-face attitude on his reality shows, but I’m definitely a fan of his burger restaurant.
You’ll find Gordon Ramsay Burger in Planet Hollywood. The burgers are cooked over an open flame. If you’re a vegetarian, you can enjoy the portabella burger. You might have to stand in line for a little while because the restaurant is popular. It’s also in a great location.
Gordon Ramsay Burger is open from 11 am to 2 am.
USA Today says that Holsteins makes the best burger in Las Vegas.
If you’re a drinker, you’ll probably also enjoy their alcohol-infused milkshakes.
Holsteins is located inside the Cosmopolitan.
Also, I know it’s about the burgers, but you must try the Truffle Lobster Mac N Cheese, too.
Most of the meals here cost between $10 and $20.
This one’s relatively new, having opened in late 2014 at the New York-New York.
Shake Shack is, of course, a chain restaurant, but their Vegas location tries to capture the spirit of this unique destination.
Unlike many of their other stores, Shake Shack Las Vegas has plenty of choices when it comes to beer and wine. They also offer baked items from Gimme Some Sugar, a local baker.
They open every day at 11 am and stay open until 2 am. They don’t only serve amazing burgers; you can also get great hot dogs at Shake Shack.
They do serve burgers at Todd English P.U.B., but this is one time I’ll recommend skipping the burger and going with another menu item.
The star of the show here is the prime beef sandwich.
If you like watching sports while you eat, Todd English P.U.B. is perfect for that, too. They have several big screen TVs to choose from. As you might expect from a place with a name like this, the selection of beers is staggering.
They’re open from 11 am to 11 pm, seven days a week.
I’m from Texas, and when we talk about dinner in Texas, we usually mean steak. (Sometimes we mean barbecue or Tex-Mex, but usually, we mean steak.)
So yes, you’ll notice a bias toward steakhouses below. Like I said earlier, this is MY list.
But don’t worry. It’s not all about steak below. You’ll see.
If you’re looking for someplace quiet and intimate to take someone you love to eat, consider La Cave at the Wynn.
It’s all about low ceilings and closeness.
Also, this is the opposite of what you’d expect at many Las Vegas restaurants. I’ve written about a lot of places offering excessive amounts of food for your money.
La Cave, though, is all about small-plate dishes.
Billy DeMarco is the chef here, and he’s put together offerings of beef, seafood, and vegetables. The restaurant includes suggested beer and wine pairings for each dish, too. The patio looks out over the swimming pool at the Wynn, making this an excellent spot for people-watching.
Did you ever want to eat at a restaurant where your meal is prepared right before your eyes?
If so, L’Atelier at MGM Grand is for you.
The genius chef behind this restaurant is “chef of the century” Joel Robuchon.
This one’s only open for dinner, although you can get here for a fairly early dinner. They open at 5 pm.
This is French food, of course, and the dress code is business casual. If you want to impress a foodie date, take her here.
The original Old Homestead is a landmark New York City steakhouse that opened in 1868.
The brothers whose family owns the original brought a version of Old Homestead to Vegas, and this is one of the steakhouses most worth visiting in Sin City.
Like many classic steakhouses, you’ll find décor that consists of dark wood and leather. Most people don’t care so much about that, though—they’re more interested in the various cuts of meat available.
I’ve written extensively about burgers here, too, and I’d be remiss in my duties if I didn’t point out how great the burgers at Old Homestead are.
You can (and probably should) add truffle butter to anything you order at the Old Homestead, too.
I wrote extensively about the Pantry in my earlier section regarding breakfast.
It’s also worth considering as a dinner option, though.
I love homestyle comfort food, and I’d imagine most of my readers do, too. It’s also open twenty-four hours a day.
The Peppermill is one of those famous, old-school Vegas restaurants everyone should try once—especially diners who enjoy large portions.
They’ve been serving big meals since 1972.
This is one of Penn Jillette’s favorite restaurants. He loves the Peppermill so much that he had a booth that looks like a booth from this restaurant custom-built and installed in his home.
They serve American-style food. Most of their entrees cost between $15 and $20. I probably should have included them in the breakfast section, too, as they also offer an extensive breakfast menu.
Raku Grill offers affordable Japanese food.
They specialize in charcoal-grilled entrees, but they also have various rice and noodle dishes to choose from.
I suggest getting the chef’s special. It will cost between $75 and $100, and the chef will choose the dishes for your multiple-course meal.
This is admittedly one of the lower-rent casinos on the Strip.
It’s older and kinda kitschy.
But don’t let that prevent you from enjoying one of the most traditional and delicious steakhouses Las Vegas has to offer.
THE Steak House at Circus Circus has won multiple “best of” awards for best steak in Las Vegas, including from Zagat.
It’s a traditional-style steakhouse, and you can also get lobster and crab legs.
They’re only open for dinner, but they open early—at 4 pm.
The steakhouse at Planet Hollyood can be found on the mezzanine level, and it’s the kind of traditional steakhouse that beef-lovers dream of.
The goose fat potatoes are especially notable.
Also, if you like chocolate cake—and who doesn’t?—you must try it here.
Don’t be surprised, though. The Strip House at Planet Hollywood is pretty upscale and expensive.
Most of the people I know who love food have a sweet tooth. Luckily, several establishments in Las Vegas offer amazing sweets. Some of them are more affordable than others.

What is there to say about a store that sells cupcakes?
They’re really good cupcakes, though.
They have a huge chocolate factory or two, but what you want to visit is the chocolate and candy store in Vegas.
It’s located in the California Hotel, admission is free, and it’s open from 8 am to 8 pm every day.
Ethel M also offers tours of their factories and occasional chocolate tasting classes.
I didn’t include a lot of full-service restaurants on this list of places to eat sweets, but the desserts at Hexx Kitchen and Bar warrant their inclusion.
It’s all about the special Hexx chocolate desserts here.
Feel free to enjoy dinner here, but save room for dessert.
This one’s located at the Bellagio.
It features artistic pastries from World Pastry Champion Jean-Philippe Maury.
The chocolate fountain is cool.
They also serve crepes, salads, and sandwiches.
But save room for dessert, I beg of you.
M&M’s have their own stores in just four locations across the world.
Luckily, one of these is in Las Vegas.
They’re open every day from 9 am to midnight. The facility is four stories and is made up on 28,000 square feet of fun that melts in your mouth, not in your hands. My favorite part was being able to print my own personalized M&M’s.
They also show a 3-D movie called I Lost My “M” in Vegas.
If you love to eat, Las Vegas is the place to be.
I’ve listed 22 suggestions about where to eat in Las Vegas, but I’m sure any food expert could easily come up with her own list of suggestions—all of which would be different from mine.
I’ve focused largely on the kinds of food I enjoy—breakfast, burgers, and steaks. I’ve also included a few suggestions for where to eat sweets.
Most gourmands will find plenty to enjoy on the list above.

If done properly and responsibly, betting on sports is an extremely safe and fun way to enhance your viewing experience while also having a chance to make a few bucks.
However, like any other big-money industry, there are some shady sites and people out there who are simply looking to rip you off. Especially at Super Bowl time, where promises of massive bonuses and other promotional offers always need to be taken with a grain of salt.
If you’re wading into the online sports betting waters for the first time, make sure you educate yourself first about the safest sites to bet at. Only use sportsbooks that have been around for a number of years, have a solid reputation for paying their customers, are licensed and regulated in the jurisdiction they reside in. It’s the most bet-on event in North American sports, so much is on the line for the participants, and you’re probably watching it with a bunch of friends, only adding to the excitement. Maybe you’re even having a few cold ones, which might make you a bit more reckless and carefree with your betting.
Please, please, PLEASE be sure not to wager more than you can afford to lose. Just because it’s the big game doesn’t mean the Super Bowl needs to be your biggest bet of the year. In fact, the Super Bowl point spread and Over/Under might be the toughest lines to beat in all of sports. With so many people betting on the game, oddsmakers are able to take all these opinions into account when setting the number. The bookies also need to make good and sure that they don’t put out a bad line or they’ll lose a ton of money.
You don’t necessarily need to stick to that, especially if you’re just a casual bettor who doesn’t really need a bankroll to bet on anything else. But it’s a good idea to set yourself a limit before the game begins and make sure that you don’t exceed it, which is easy to do with live betting and halftime betting available. A half-point difference on the point spread or total may not seem that significant when you go to make your bet, but it is often the difference between winning and pushing a wager, or the difference between pushing and losing.
You also also want to make sure you’re paying attention to the juice (the amount you need to risk on a bet relative to the amount you want to win) attached to the bets you’re making. For example, at the time of writing, 5Dimes had the Eagles +4 at -101 juice while MyBookie.ag had the Eagles +4.5 at -115. Even though MyBookie is offering an extra half-point on the Eagles, you need to risk $115 for every $100 you want to win, as opposed to taking the Eagles +4 at nearly even money at 5Dimes. Personally, we’d much rather bet the Eagles +4 at -101 odds, since getting +4.5 doesn’t increase your probability of winning the wager as much as 14 cents of juice would suggest.
The discrepancy in odds offered by different betting sites are often more substantial on Super Bowl props. At the time of writing, Bovada was listing Tom Brady at -110 odds to win the MVP award, TopBet.eu had Brady at -135 odds and MyBookie.ag made him a -170 favorite. By betting Brady to win MVP at Bovada instead of MyBookie, you’re risking nearly half the amount on the same bet!
There may be some occasions in which you’re willing to take slightly worse odds on your bet, like if you can take advantage of a big sign-up bonus at the site offering the worse odds. But otherwise, why would you choose to get paid less money on your winning wagers? Look around at all of the top Super Bowl 52 betting sites to see which one is offering the best odds for the bets you want to make, then sign up and take advantage.
Some Super Bowl 52 prop bets will be decided purely by luck. Take the coin toss, for example. There’s a 50/50 chance that the coin will land either heads or tails, or that the Patriots or Eagles will win the toss. No research in the world will help you increase your chances of winning that bet (which is why you shouldn’t wager any significant amount on props like that.)
However, you can get an edge in many other Super Bowl 52 props (and even the point spread or total) if you simply do your homework.
With all the sports media networks and websites currently out there, there’s so much data available about these 2 teams and their tendencies that it actually be overwhelming. My advice is to identify a few props or other betting angles in which you haven’t noticed that much information about, then do some digging to see what you can find.
For example, did you know that the Patriots haven’t scored any points in the first quarter of any of the 7 Super Bowls they’ve played in under Bill Belichick? Meanwhile, Philadelphia was third in the NFL in first-quarter scoring this past season, averaging 6.3 points per opening frame. Knowing this, Philadelphia +0.5 in the first quarter (a bet you can make at Topbet.eu and other betting sites) looks like a pretty smart wager.
Winning at Super Bowl betting isn’t necessarily about picking the most winners. It’s about identifying the best value.
What do we mean by that? Well, betting on big favorites all the time (-200 odds or higher, for example) will probably result in more winners than losers. But when you’re routinely laying 2 to win 1, you need to win at least two-thirds of your bets just to break even. That makes it really hard to turn a profit.
This will often require thinking like a contrarian (opposite of what the majority of people are thinking), but that’s also usually where the best value lies.
